HOW TO HAVE A CONVERSATION

Talking sincerely about a mental health need can make a difference in your relationships. It can be unfamiliar to start a discussion, and even more difficult with team members, family, or friends who may be struggling. What should I say? What shouldn’t I say?

If you want ideas on how to start, here are some conversation guidelines:

Do:
  • Talk about and share your own emotional well-being and mental health to help reduce stigma.
  • Check in with people often, especially during challenging times.
  • If you think someone is having a difficult time, try to speak with them at a time and place where they feel safe and comfortable.
  • Try asking “I’ve been worried about you. Can we talk about what you’re experiencing?” or “How can I help you find more information about supporting your mental health?”
  • Listen actively and without judgment, and look out for themes in what they say (e.g. family or financial concerns).
  • Encourage the person to take action and offer to connect them with Spring Health or other resources. Ask questions such as “What’s a good first step we can take?” or “How can I help?”
  • Check in with the person after a couple days have passed. Let them know that you are still there to help.
Don’t:
  • Don’t be afraid to ask whether someone is OK.
  • Don’t ignore or avoid the person.
  • Don’t try to solve the person’s problems; you are there to listen and to help connect them to support.
  • Don’t force a conversation if the person becomes confused or upset. It’s alright to slow down or back up and wait for a better moment.
  • Don’t pry into the person’s personal problems, but listen in a caring way if they choose to share them.
  • Don’t downplay what the person is experiencing or tell them that ”Everything is fine,” or ”You’re worrying about nothing.”
  • Don’t feel like you need to have all the answers. Listening is the best thing you can do.
  • Don’t interrupt or rush the conversation.
  • Don’t take it personally if the person becomes upset or angry.
  • Don’t avoid seeking support yourself, if you’re unsure what steps to follow or if someone’s struggles feel overwhelming.

HOW TO HELP IF SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS IN CRISIS

Simply having a conversation with someone who is in pain might help save their life. Remember these four key steps when someone is in crisis:

  1. Listen: Give them the opportunity to express how they’re feeling.
  2. Offer resources: Direct them to available resources such as Spring Health, their personal licensed clinician if they already have one, or other national resources.
  3. Get help: Call Spring Health crisis support for 24/7 immediate, confidential support from a licensed professional: 1-855-629-0554 (or, 1-800-626-0738), option 2
    • Other national crisis support options are The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255; Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741; Spanish National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-888-628-9454 available 24/7.
  4. Follow up: Check back in with the individual to make sure they are connected with a resource and have the support that they need.
